This is so on point. I saw Rental Family. Because I have spent time in Japan, there were many things about it that made me laugh. But, the overall meaning of the practice of these rental (masking) experiences was sad. I mentioned it to a grocery store clerk I know who spends a lot of time in Japan and he said it was a common practice. ... I love your description of the layering and the aspect of the ink changing the surface chemically over time. There is much to contemplate from this posting, Bruce. I will revisit it. a few years ago there was an installation artist(female) that as a part of her installation she sat in a chair and invited participants to gaze into her eyes for a prescribed period of time in silence. It might have been 3 minutes or more. It was powerful in that you felt that you were known just by gazing. I've seen this experience published in other contexts as well as a way to heal divides between unlikely companions in life. face to face....so very powerful
